Students in Jim Cassella’s class at Emerson J. Dillon Middle School recently embarked on a unique learning experience, connecting with peers from Greece through an engaging distance learning lesson. 
This opportunity was facilitated through the Distance Learning program at CiTi BOCES, allowing students to expand their horizons and foster cross-cultural understanding, all from the comfort of their classroom.
Utilizing state-of-the-art video conferencing technology, students from each classroom asked one another “yes” or “no” questions to pinpoint the location of the other class. Cassella’s students tried to narrow down the location of their peers by asking if they were north or south of the equator, if their country was landlocked, or if it bordered a particular body of water. Once the students successfully determined the location of the other class, they were able to spend some time talking to one another about cultural traditions, educational practices, and everyday life. 
“Opportunities like this bring learning to life,” said Cassella. “Our students are making global connections and learning about different cultures and perspectives. These personal exchanges help cultivate empathy, curiosity, and a global mindset.”
This global connection is part of Emerson J. Dillon Middle School’s ongoing commitment to integrating technology into education and providing students with enriching experiences that prepare them for the future. The class also connected with students from Argentina, with additional experiences planned throughout the year.
