Phoenix students lauded for volunteerism

Thirteen John C. Birdlebough High School students were recently celebrated for their volunteer efforts in the community as they earned Presidential Youth Service Awards.

The annual banquet and awards ceremony, held at the Phoenix Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5540, recognizes students who have dedicated their time serving the community through a variety of actions. This year's honorees volunteered with numerous local groups and organizations. They helped senior citizens, cleaned up the village, rang the bell for the Salvation Army and participated in several other activities for the betterment of the community.

“Your achievements in such a short span of time are truly commendable,” said Phoenix Central School District Superintendent Christopher Byrne. “Your dedication to volunteering speaks volumes about your character. Thank you for your dedication to our school district and community.”

Throughout the evening, family members, school administrators, local dignitaries and government officials offered congratulatory remarks and handshakes to the honorees. Each speaker celebrated the award recipients and acknowledged the students' contributions to the community.

Following remarks, each honoree was recognized with a certificate of commendation. A bronze award (300+ hours of service) was presented to Elizabeth Bullis. Silver awards (500+ hours of service) went to Clarence Bullis, Miley Esposito, Michael Farnham and Marcus Horne. Gold awards, representing 1,000 or more hours of volunteerism, were presented to Cole Bailer, Eli Bailer, Julian Burns, Matthew Caltabiano, Juan Gonzalez and Ellie Morrison.

In addition to the bronze, silver, and gold medallion distinctions, two students, Gabbriella Runge and Kai Clary, were selected as Youth of the Year Award recipients for their exemplary service and commitment to the Phoenix community.
