Press Release - School District & Village Collaborate for New Crosswalk at JCB

Posted Date: 10/28/24 (3:30 PM)

With a focus on student and pedestrian safety, the Phoenix Central School District recently partnered with the Village of Phoenix to install a new crosswalk in front of the high school. The existing crosswalk was in a high-traffic area on Main Street, adjacent to Park Street, and made it challenging for pedestrians and drivers to navigate.

“It was a busy area that made it hard for everyone trying to cross safely,” said PCSD Director of Operations and Maintenance Jason Godkin. “We wanted to make sure our students were able to cross without jeopardizing their safety.”

After recognizing the potential hazards of the existing crosswalk, district and village officials discussed alternative options. PCSD administration, the district’s Operations and Maintenance Team, School Resource Officers, Phoenix Mayor Brian Borchik, the DPW, and the village Police Department collaborated on a solution.

“We all worked together as soon as this issue was brought up,” Borchik said. “There wasn’t any red tape or delays. We have a great partnership and we make things happen especially when it comes to safety.”

The district provided concrete for the new crosswalk, the DPW poured the concrete and the DPW will apply reflective paint later this week. Lighted signs will also be installed as an additional safety measure.

“Student safety is our top priority, and we are so grateful to everyone who made this possible,” said PCSD Superintendent Christopher Byrne. “I would like to express my appreciation for our O&M team as well as the mayor and village departments for their collaboration on this safety initiative. We have an amazing team here in Phoenix!”
