EJD Fifth Graders Take STEM Learning for a Ride with Hovercraft Project

Fifth-grade students at Emerson J. Dillon Middle School recently enjoyed a fun-filled day of hands-on learning when the Hovercraft Project visited the school, bringing science, technology, engineering and mathematics to life.
Students worked together to build their own hovercrafts before putting their creations to the test in races with each another. Even staff members got involved in the racing action at the end of the lesson as they raced across the gym floor. The experience gave students an opportunity to explore engineering concepts in a memorable, interactive setting while seeing the results of their hard work in action.
Beyond STEM learning, the project emphasized valuable life skills, including teamwork, communication, problem-solving and perseverance. Students collaborated throughout the building process, worked through challenges and encouraged one another as they prepared for race day.
“The visit provided a memorable combination of learning and fun,” said EJD Principal Brett Doody. “It just goes to show you that some of the most meaningful educational experiences happen when students have the opportunity to build, experiment and learn by doing. We are so grateful to provide learning opportunities like this to our students.”
