Capenos, Goudy Earn Top 2 Ranking Among JCB Class of 2026

Valedictorian Jonathan Capenos
While Phoenix senior Jonathan Capenos considers himself to be relatively quiet and reserved, his impact on the John C. Birdlebough High School Class of 2026 is anything but, as he worked his way to the top of the class.
Jonathan, son of Stacey Capenos-Hamilton and Adam Capenos, earned the title of valedictorian after distinguishing himself through academic excellence, dedication and a passion for learning.
He credits much of his success to his own motivation and curiosity.
“I attribute my success to being highly self-motivated to do good in school,” he said. “I enjoy learning.”
During his time at JCB, Capenos participated in indoor and outdoor track and field for four years, cross country for two years and the Trap Shooting Club for one year. Beyond academics and extracurricular activities, he is known by classmates and teachers as a respectful, thoughtful student who values education.
Capenos said the support and enthusiasm of his teachers played a significant role in shaping his academic interests.
“A lot of my enjoyment of math and science stemmed from the obvious enjoyment that my teachers had in teaching and their enthusiasm for the topics as well,” he said.
After graduation, Capenos plans to pursue his passion for math and science in college, where he will major in electrical engineering. He noted he was motivated by the challenge of the field and said he looks forward to pursuing a career in the industry. His long-term goal is to secure a respected engineering position at a nuclear power plant and eventually purchase a home.
Salutatorian Michael Goudy
Juggling a full schedule of academics, music, and athletic commitments, Phoenix senior Michael Goudy V maintained a level of excellence on his way to becoming salutatorian of the John C. Birdlebough High School Class of 2026.
Michael, the son of Michael Goudy IV and Amber Goudy, plans to attend the University at Buffalo after graduation, where he will major in civil engineering. Drawn to the field by his passion for STEM subjects, he hopes to apply his knowledge to projects that make a tangible impact on communities.
“I am planning to major in civil engineering because I have always enjoyed STEM and wish to incorporate it into the real world,” he said, noting that eventually he would like to become a civil engineer, ideally working in Central New York.
Throughout high school, Goudy was actively involved in numerous extracurricular activities. He was a member of the National Honor Society and served as the organization’s secretary. He also participated in Student Council, was a member of the SADD Club, played several varsity and junior varsity sports, performed with Symphonic Winds, and participated in photography.
With so many extracurricular activities, Goudy noted that his drive for excellence and being a perfectionist helped fuel him in his achievements. He also said the Phoenix Central School District has helped him develop both academically and personally.
“The school has allowed me to build relationships with friends that will last a lifetime and has set me up to become a successful adult,” he said.
